15 Years Later, They’re Still Enjoying the Good Life As Cottage Owners

This winter, Great Falls, Montana reached negative 44 degrees. And while everyone was bundled up extra tight or huddled around the fireplace, Rod and Carol Kummer are enjoying shorts and flip-flop weather in Hemet, California.

The couple starting traveling to Golden Village Palms to escape the cold, snow, and icy roads 15 years ago, eventually opting for RV-free accommodations that allow them to take full advantage of the community and amenities without getting behind the wheel. “We have been coming to this resort for the past 15 years and stay from October 1st to April 1st,” says the couple, who volunteer in several capacities at the resort, including as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at Christmastime.

Rod and Carol Kummer love to help out and volunteer at the resort, including as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at Christmastime.

“We enjoyed our stays so much that, in 2016, we decided not to haul our 32-foot Alfa Fifth Wheel trailer anymore and settled comfortably into a permanent GVP Park Model Resort Cottage.”

Golden Village Palms’ Resort Cottages are a popular option for travelers who are looking to spend time at the resort and enjoy the amenities and activities, with or without an RV. They offer well-designed, private accommodations with all the comforts of home — a large bedroom and full bath, a spacious living area and well-amenitized kitchen with dining area, and private outdoor space. Cottages are available to both rent and purchase.

The Kummers first discovered Golden Village Palms after Carol’s retirement from the Great Falls Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where she worked for more than 20 years, and Rod’s retirement from the Montana Air National Guard after 38 years. His deployment to March Air Force Base in Riverside, California, where he was supposed to be on a short mission but ended up staying for two years, put “The Good Life” of GVP in the couple’s sights.

“Upon visiting GVP and looking around the resort, we were impressed,” they say. The pair considered researching other resorts in the area, but were told by a local, “Don’t bother looking at the other Hemet RV parks. This one is the best and has a very active seniors’ community.” That was “all we needed to know, so we booked a stay, and here we are today — 15 years later and still enjoying all that GVP has to offer!”

Having spent so much time at the resort, the Kummers are uniquely aware of what makes GVP so special. “It’s simple, folks. “There are 1,000 RV spots, a large ballroom for dances and events, three pools/hot tubs, a fully equipped exercise room, a billiards room, a large indoor shuffleboard building, two sand volleyball courts, four pickleball courts, two dog parks, and Tribute Band concerts throughout the season in our large ballroom, to name just a few of the features,” says the active couple, who take part in many of the activities on a regular basis. “There are also good restaurants, reasonable golfing, outlet shopping nearby, and you are in close proximity to Palms Springs, San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Temecula Wine Country, making this your No. 1 RV resort destination.”

The relationships that the Kummers have made, both with those who also visit GVP and those who work at the resort, have also added considerably to their enjoyment. “We return to this beautiful resort year after year because of the wonderful staff who makes you feel right at home. You are greeted with smiling faces at the front desk by the most helpful and caring staff,” they explain. “The Grounds Crew diligently takes care of the landscape and individual sites. Michael and Paula make sure all questions and needs are taken care of. Tracie, our Activities Director, makes sure there are enough activities to keep all the GVP Resort guests happy. That’s a BIG JOB with what can number 1,000+ RV guests! We also return because of all the friends we have met here and the lasting friendships we have made. When September and October come, the emails and phone calls keep friends informed on your arrival.”

In fact, they love their time at the resort so much that they have even offered to play tour guide for new visitors. “We could go on and on about GVP Resort but we think you should make your own decision,” they say. “Why not come and enjoy a week at our beautiful GVP Resort and make sure you check out their ‘Pick Your Week and Save’ special rate. We would be happy to show you around the resort to see what you are missing. Just tell the gals at the front desk you want to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. They will know where to find us. Hope to see you soon, GVP neighbors!”
