Depending on when you visit, one of the area’s much anticipated annual events for a few weekends in April and May is the Ramona Pageant featuring weekend performances of the play “Ramona” – California’s official outdoor play — held just south of the city in a natural, 160 acre amphitheatre in the rocky hillsides called the Romona Bowl Amphitheater.

Originating in 1923, “Ramona” is the longest running outdoor play in the United States. It’s an adaptation of the 1884 novel Romona by Helen Hunt Jackson. As the play unfolds, spectators learn through the fictional account of Romona and her Native American lover in the 1850’s much of the early history of Southern California.

The Ramona Bowl Amphitheater has a seating capacity of 5,400. It is also the venue of other theatrical events throughout the year including the Shakespeare Festival, the Courtyard Dinner Theatre Summer series, and the Ramona Bowl Repertory Theatres’ fall musical production.
