The old saying goes that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. It could have been coined by Tracie Rodgers, Events Coordinator for Golden Village Palms RV Resort.
Employed with Sunland RV Resorts since 2001, Rodgers spends her days at Golden Village Palms meeting and interacting with guests, in addition to planning fun events that keep them smiling right alongside her and coming back again and again.
“I am grateful to work in a position that allows me to interact with the guests in a less formal fashion,” Rodgers says, who is married with a young son who is “the light of my life.” That interaction breeds familiarity with guests to the resort and also builds and reveals friendships among those who love being here.
“I love to talk about their families and hear about the places they are from,” she explains. “My favorite experience to witness is what I call, ‘small world effect.’” Each week, we host a welcome reception, and new guests and returning guests have an opportunity to introduce themselves and say where they are from. Afterward, a guest will go to another guest and tell him or her things like, ‘I lived next door to your brother for 30 years!’ I absolutely love when this happens! I also love when guests meet each other at the resort for the first time and then become friends and tell me stories about how they met up at other times.”
In planning and coordinating events at the resort, Rodgers has the privilege of working collaboratively with guests, which not only gives her some much-appreciated help, but also makes the experience more enjoyable.
“I have the extreme pleasure to lead a large volunteer force made up of our guests and we have the best times together,” she says. “Being in the hospitality industry, your hours are not generally nine to five, Monday through Friday. Some days can be 16 hours long, with multiple requests and responsibilities coming at you from all sides. Working with the amazing guests our resort attracts certainly makes the hours spent at work a pleasure. Plus, the beauty of our resort—especially at night, with the moon shining and the palm trees glowing—is breathtaking.”
Rodgers’ experience at Golden Village Palms reinforces the importance of applying your skills and also following your passion. “I have learned through the years how important it is to find a job where you can use your personal talents,” she says, “and I love to talk to and meet new people!”
