Temecula area's first winemakers were missionaries. Missionary vineyards were established in 1820. It wasn't until the 1960s that commercial vineyards began developing. Temecula's climate is similar to the Mediterranean which is ideal for growing wine grapes. Lots of sun, little rain, and cool temperatures in the evenings as the coastal breeze enters the valley from the ocean. Also, Temecula is the only city in California to retain its aboriginal name.
